St. Alphonsus Liguori
Feast Days: August 1
Time Period: 1696 - 1787
Place: Naples, Italy
Patronage: Theologians, Vocations
A well-educated son of a noble family, Alphonsus Liguori was awarded doctorates of civil and canon law at the age of 16. He followed his father’s will, becoming a gifted lawyer by the age of 20. This work did not satisfy him and after losing an important court case he left the profession and entered the priesthood. In 1732 Alphonsus dedicated himself completely to the service of the poor and abandoned. He sought others with this call and began the Redemptorist order. Three images formed his teaching; the infant Jesus in the crib, Jesus crucified, Jesus vibrantly alive and filled with love in the Eucharist. Alphonsus brought God’s love to the people through his gift of music and composing, spiritual writing and painting. Alphonsus was a man of passion and volatility who found his balance and security in devotion to the Blessed Mother.
The heart of man will never find true peace, if it does not empty itself of all that is not God. But this the soul cannot do of itself; it must obtain it of God by repeated prayers
