Blessed Maria Sagrario of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga

Born in Spain in 1881, Maria was one of the first women in Spain to become a pharmacist. Although she excelled in the field she discerned a call to the religious life. She entered the Carmel of St. Anne and St. Joseph in Madrid in 1915. Just before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War the convent was attacked and Maria was arrested. Under interrogation she refused to betray anyone and was executed on the Feast of the Assumption of Mary.
