Curriculum Overview For Grade Three
2007-2008
Teachers:
The purpose of this page is to provide a general overview of the curriculum offered to Third Grade students at St. Thomas More Parish School. More detailed information may be obtained from individual teachers and administrators.
Language Arts
Learner Objectives & Curriculum Overview:
* Reading: Demonstrate the ability to answer comprehension questions using details in a complete sentence.
* Writing: Demonstrate knowledge of the writing process.
* Handwriting: Demonstrate appropriate letter formations when writing in manuscript and cursive.
* Oral Communication: Demonstrate ability to speak fluently with expression in a given time span.
Spanish
Learner Objectives & Curriculum Overview:
Our Spanish Language Program introduces students to the pronunciation and intonation patterns, the basic grammatical structures and vocabulary of Spanish, developing elementary listening, speaking and reading skills.
Science
Learner Objectives & Curriculum Overview:
*Physical Science: Demonstrate ability to analyze data from an experiment and give reasons for differences.
*Earth Science: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the earth’s resources.
*Life Science: Demonstrate knowledge and apply information about characteristics and processes of life.
Math
Learner Objectives & Curriculum Overview:
*Number System and Numeration: Demonstrate ability to solve mathematical problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
*Measurement: Demonstrate ability to solve problems involving temperature, money, time and conversions.
*Geometric Concepts: Demonstrate the ability to recognize two and three dimensional objects.
Social Studies
Learner Objectives & Curriculum Overview:
* Geographic Perspectives: Demonstrate knowledge of how natural resources are important to communities and develop various map skills.
* Civic Perspectives: Demonstrate the ability to identify how people have organized and governed themselves throughout history.
* Economic Perspectives: Demonstrate the ability to give examples of different mediums of exchange.
* Social and Cultural: Demonstrate the ability to gather and report current events.
Music
Learner Objectives & Curriculum Overview:
Daily instruction will provide a strong music curriculum for all grade levels. Includes:
* Weekly Mass
* Field Trips

* Entertainment
Religion
Learner Objectives & Curriculum Overview:
* Profession of Faith: Recognize faith as a gift from a loving God.
* Celebration of the Christian: Recognize the Holy Spirit in the Sacraments by participating in a regular liturgical celebration.
* Life in Christ: Recognize that human dignity comes from being created by God in His image.
* Christian Prayer: Recognize that Christian prayer is a covenant between God and man and practice prayer daily.
Technology
Learner Objectives & Curriculum Overview:
Technology class starts in Kindergarten and goes through Eighth Grade. Some of the skills covered are keyboarding, technological awareness, word processing, database, spreadsheets, multimedia, graphics, and web design.
Art
Learner Objectives & Curriculum Overview:
Each art project introduces a basic skill, which is taught in 3 to 7 art experiences. In Third Grade the student will: identify and use a variety of lines; identify and use different shapes (geometric and organic); understand basic color theory (primary, secondary, complimentary warm/cool; explore and use texture; practice spatial concepts overlap and balance); practice repetition and pattern; explore and create contrast and value; create a composition using the elements and principles of design.
Physical Education
Learner Objectives & Curriculum Overview:
Students in the St. Thomas More physical education program will:
1) Complete a daily exercise regimen designed to prevent injury, increase dexterity, promote greater strength, and enhance sense of well-being and confidence.
2) Learn rules of contests and reasons behind same.
3) Practice competitiveness with regard to Christian sportsmanship.
4) Learn basic fundamentals of unit or sport prior to actively participating.
5) Understand the necessity of firm but fair discipline in all activities.
6) Learn the value of treating teammates and opponents with dignity and respect.
7) Ultimately believe and be proud of the fact that their P.E. program is one of the finest in the state.
