The Truth About Suffering
For the first time in 45 years, a solemn high pontifical Mass was celebrated in the extraordinary form at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC.
The occasion was the 5th anniversary of Benedict XVI’s pontificate, and the entire liturgical celebration was abosultely beautiful and moving. But, without a doubt, the most impactful element was Bishop Slattery’s homily.
He spoke of suffering - the Church's, the Pope's, and all people's - and the mystery of suffering and obedience. He clearly distiguished the Christian understanding of suffering and obedience from that of the world, and affirmed that the Truth is elusive and, in fact, alien to the world.
"Do not be dismayed that there are many in the Church who have not yet grasped this point, and fewer yet still in the world will even dare to consider it. But you – you know this to be true – and it is enough. For ten men who whisper the truth speak louder than a hundred million who lie."
Those of us at St. Thomas More who have felt pain from the recent attacks on our priests may find this homily worth reading. Read Bishop Slattery’s homily.
